Simply letting your management know that you are leaving the job on a particular date is never a recommended way to resign. It's always wise to not burn bridges. You never know when you will need your past employers for a reference.

Therefore, handle your resignation as carefully as you would handle any other business activity. The most important thing is to make sure that your exit from the organisation is as smooth as possible.


If you resign with dignity and class, you'll be remembered. Turning in your resignation isn't always easy, so follow these tips to make it as painless as possible:

» First of all, be sure that you really want to quit.
» Do you have another job offer?

If so, compare fully the new position versus your current position. Consider the work environment, flexibility, salary and benefits in addition to the job responsibilities.  How about the growth opportunities? If the score is higher on all counts offered by the new job and you feel sure that this is the right change to make, go ahead.

Check your contract

Ensure- that you are following all the procedures and laws that are mentioned in your appointment letter.

» What is your notice period? 

Unless you can get your employer to waive your notice period, you are legally obliged to work it. It is unprofessional to leave without a notice and it can also haunt you in future.
Doing so with good grace is advised.
Knowing where you stand legally will give you more confidence when it comes to breaking the news.

» Make sure that you are receiving you are entitled to while leaving.

Write a formal resignation letter

» Address it to your boss or the signatory of your appointment letter, put the date, when this will be effective from, details of your notice period, these are essentials.
» If you have a genuinely good stay, then include some brief positive comments about your time at the company.
» It's a good idea to mention that you want to handover the details of the work in progress  to somebody nominated to receive the charge from you, and that you're keen to finish any outstanding projects.

» It is normal trend & also professional to resign in person.
» Take an appointment from him to discuss the matter and submit the resignation.
» Prepare in advance your verbal resignation
» Try to anticipate your boss's reaction, and prepare some responses. Though you are going to quit, you need to be polite.
» Be positive about your period of stay with the company. Thank them for the opportunities they've given you.
» Give the organisation time to find a replacement and offer to participate in the smooth transition by training your replacement sincerely or by assigning your duties to colleague.
Exit interview
» Some employers operate exit interviews as a matter of policy. 
» Exit interviews are a forum for you to offer constructive feedback to your employer, so that they can learn from your experience of working for them.
» Some employers take the results of exit interviews very seriously, and change policy on the basis of what is said.
» Prepare your comments in advance, and be specific. If you feel that your employer is doing something wrong, give an example of how you experienced this, and how you feel it could have been done differently. Don't drag others into your complaint, as they have to carry on working once you've left. 
» Be careful -- but be professional. Remember not to burn any bridges by saying anything negative or petty.
And before you're off!
» Final cheque: Ensure that your salary settlement is completed.
» Complete : Work sincerely to finish your outstanding projects, and arrange to hand over unfinished work to your colleagues. Stay an active member of the team and don't leave suddenly. Leave detailed notes for your boss and colleagues.
» Network : Say goodbye individually to your colleagues. Get the contact details of anybody you want to keep in touch with, whether for personal reasons or because you might need them in the future.
» Return any company property - anything else that doesn't belong to you.

Always be polite, humble and grateful to the organisation that you are resigning from so that your professional image can be maintained. Act in a way that you are always praised for your professional and humble attitude in the organisation. And whenever better opportunities come up you could be called back.

Be highly professional because the word is small and you might end up meeting your senior very often.
